- Description
- AS4156.6 is an Australian Standard test method to determine the dustiness and dust extinction moisture (DEM) of coal. This paper presents an overview of findings from a recently completed Australian Coal Research Programme (ACARP) project C26007. The project investigated different sample preparation methods, from which a procedure that produces reduced error and greatest level of repeatability was specified. The influence of air drying duration and moisture content reduction (drying) schemes in a controlled laboratory environment and in the oven at a temperature of 40 degreesC were investigated. A total of six coal samples were studied with comprehensive testing conducted on two. The revised sample preparation method involves representatively sampling coal using a rotary sampler divider (RSD) and increasing the size of the sample used for moisture content determination. Following specification of a revised preparation method, verification tests were conducted on the remaining four coal types. Additional characterisation tests including particle size distribution (PSD), density, mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and free drained saturation moisture analysis were also conducted. Furthermore, the project also included assessment of the health significant respiratory (PM10, PM2.5 and PM1) particulate matter fraction levels of all coals tested. The assessment showed that a parallel dustiness classification in terms of health-related dust fractions, similar to that outlined in the European Standard for dustiness classification EN15051-2 is possible; however, a significant modification of the AS4156.6 test apparatus and a thorough testing programme of coals is required for such a classification to be incorporated.
